Hi GadgetGirl,
I notice your concern (in two separate posts) regarding boredom.
I totally agree with Robert, you can try to get beyond boredom, by focusing on something else e.g. breathing.
However I would like to add some other thoughts (yes, my busy beta mind is a hive of mental activity!!!!) as they may help you understand and accept the phenomenon of boredom.
Note I am a user, not an expert. However I have been reading all I can lay my hands on regarding brainwave entrainment and I have a background in psychology - an interest in all things to do with the mind, brain and mental performance. So what I am sharing are my own thoughts and observations.
Boredom is an emotion we experience while we are awake (at least I have yet to experience it in dream-state), thus I conclude if you were hooked up to an EEG device boredom would generate beta waves (an awake state of mind). In my view, being bored is just a beta trick to remain in beta. Just another variation of mental chatter, antzy-ness, irritability, or the tendency to nod off.....
I am back at high school teaching right now (not my place of choice because so many of the kids do NOT want to learn). What I observe in those who have weak academic muscles (to use the BrainEv physical fitness analogy), is they use three escape routes to 'protect' themselves from learning. Some go fidgety (irritating the whole class with distraction and noise and chat), others put their heads on their arms and attempt to 'tune out', and the last group play the 'boredom game'. I am convinced that the fidgets is high beta and very hard to counteract. Drowsiness is habitual but at least doesn't disturb the class and many become quite adept at zoning out. Boredom is highly catching because the body language is so strong. Just observe a bored person's face, how they 'enact' a bored mind state.
All this is just to point out that it may help you to see Boredom as a beta mind state. Something you want to learn to escape from at will and intentionally (because it is so damn distracting, convincing - we believe ourselves 100%, "I am bored because this [BrainEv] is boring."). It is a tool used by escapists to escape something. If this is true, what are you trying to escape from? Observe this pre and post session. Ask yourself why 30 mins of soothing sound track bores you? What is the purpose of being bored? What are your earliest memories of being bored? And above all, learn to recognise your beta-boredom frequency. It may be specific to you, and is possible a trap to escape from. In my case it is (was actually as BrainEv has ousted it) Beta-Frazzle. Beta-frazzle is a revved-up, jizzy, restless, anxious, busy-busy-busy but totally unproductive mind-state I can (could) easily slip into. It is a zone of anxious circular thoughts. Of focusing on a problem, again and again, replays ad nauseum, BUT there is no attempt to solve the problem. BrainEv shifted me out of this and my insomnia and worry-wart persona diminished.
Just a thought, GadgetGirl, so you learn to recognise boredom if it is a distructive, habitual mindstate when/if it occurs. And perhaps you might find that being bored isn't boring after all, but a whole new mind-zone to recognise and steer away from. Once I left Beta-Frazzle behind, amazing universes and experiences opened up. There is a whole world of mind-states and boredom is not one I want to live in or experience much of.
Happy BrainEv travels GadgetGirl, and here is to enjoying the calm, soothing, uplifting experience that alpha frequencies can deliver, when you let go of Beta-Boredom. All the best, Pure Bliss
